About the class: “It Still Takes Two: Snapshots from a Century and Half of Tango
This talk explores tango’s history through a series of “snapshots” from five key moments: the Old Guard, New Guard, Golden Age, Nuevo Tango, and today’s global scene. Focusing on both music and dance, it shows how musical styles and dance practices changed over time—and how they continue to shape one another. Along the way, the talk touches on lyrics and social settings to show how tango reflects the cultural life of Buenos Aires and beyond. Across a century and a half, one idea remains constant: tango is built on connection—it still takes two.
About John-Turci Escobar: John Turci-Escobar is Assistant Professor of Instruction in Theory and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies at the University of Texas. He earned his B.A. from Rutgers University in 1996 and his Ph.D. from Yale University in 2004. His research focuses on the late Italian madrigal, the music of Astor Piazzolla, and Argentine tango, with additional interests in nineteenth-century chromaticism, Classical form, and questions of music and meaning. He has presented at regional, national, and international conferences and is currently working on articles about Carlo Gesualdo and the late Italian madrigal, as well as a book on the 1965 collaboration between Piazzolla and Jorge Luis Borges. We are fortunate to have him as a guest teacher and DJ.
This project is supported in part by an Elevate Grant of Austin Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment.
